Passing of John Ostwald

I am saddened to pass along the news that John Ostwald, who retired several years ago following longtime service teaching psychology in the History, Philosophy and Social Sciences Department, died at the stroke of midnight, Saturday, Oct. 19, 2019, after waging a difficult, year-long battle against Stage IV pancreatic cancer.

John was a vibrant man throughout his life, who had a great deal of interests and made many friendships along the way. Racquetball, tennis, kayaking, playing piano, singing, playing and teaching how to play cards, and many trips to the casino were some of the many ways he enjoyed his personal time with his friends and family. I was fortunate to have enjoyed some of these things with him. Perhaps you were too. John also wrote a weekly column for the Sunday Troy Record. He had a special way of weaving truth and humor in the written and spoken word.

An announcement of John’s final service and a Memorial Celebration of Life will be forthcoming.
